Who Are The VAW?
VAW or Volunteers for Animal Welfare, Inc. is a donation driven organization addressing the problems of animal overpopulation and animal cruelty throughout Oklahoma. VAW runs low cost spay and neuter services and has donated to Heartland Great Dane Rescue Inc, in the past when Sabrina needed and expensive amputation surgery. They are very accessible, reputable, and most of all helpful to all animals and animal welfare groups in Oklahoma. Visit their website to learn more.
What Is Paws On Parade?
Paws on Parade is a fundraising event for the VAW, entry fees for the walk, games, activities, food, etc go to support Oklahoma animals in need. The main event, the walk is a short ( less than a mile) trip on wide sidewalks. In addition to the walk, there are booths for rescue groups, pet friendly vendors, food court, games, costume contests, and plenty to see for all those who just like to people watch. It is held at Stars and Stripe Park near the lake where there is plenty of free parking, and wide open spaces.
Admittance is free for you and your dog, participation in contests and walk are not, please see the VAW Paws on Parade website for more information on fees for activities.

Why Do We Go?
First of all, its FUN!
HGDR goes to set up a rescue booth and have foster danes meet the public, educate people about great danes, and to fundraise. We also enjoy participating in the walk, games, and meeting with other rescue groups as well as all the pet lovers who come back year after year.
What Can I Do To Help?
We would love to have you come out and enjoy the lovely fall weather with your crowd friendly great dane, sign up to participate in a contest or two. Other than that we will need a few folks for set up, sales, education and take down.

What Does HGDR Have Planned at Paws on Parade?
~ We will be having doggie Trick or Treats at our booth as will other booth vendors.
~ We will have 2 raffle baskets with trick or treat theme goodies, one for humans, one for dogs.
~ We will have bobbing for tennis balls.
Well, we have fun T-shirts from Always Innovative that we will be selling.
They'll go quick since we only have 12 total.
Sizes are Large and Extra Large. ( run large)

How It Went
Well? The weather was a factor, not sure if the event was as widely advertised as in former years, and sounds like there was some competition from the Pooch Parade. So crowds were a bit small.
Sadly no foster dogs showed up so it was hard to get interest in adoptions. Luckily, some folks at the event had danes and hung out at our booth for a little while, increasing the traffic. We sold a few t-shirts as well as some other goodies. Face Painting was quite a hit!

Raffles were pulled at 2pm instead of 3:30pm as planned since the event broke up early. Winners have been notifed.
