Megera is our sweet 9 year old black female. She has to be just about the sweetest girl we've ever met, but she does have a protective streak. She takes a while to warm up to new people, but that's OK...that just means she sticks a little closer to mom & dad!
Megera came to us because we were addicted to Danes and just couldn't wait for Dane #3 to enter our lives. She came during the time when Oklahoma did not have a rescue of it's own any longer. We were in the process of gathering information on how to get a rescue going when we contacted North Texas Great Dane Rescue where Meg was. They agreed to let us meet dogs and we just couldn't leave without our wonderful black baby, so in October of 2001, Meg became Megera and a big part of our lives!
Not only has Megera been a wonderful addition to our family, but she also gave us the opportunity to know what it is like to be on the other side of the adoption equation. We know the stress of filling out an application and worrying about that home visit...much less will they trust me to provide a wonderful, loving home to a dog they've already begun to love?! It's a tall order to expect someone to wait untill an application can be processed, a home visit scheduled and that final call saying you are approved...we know what that feels like and want to do our best to make it as comfortable as possible for our adopters.
Adopting Meg also gave us the opportunity to meet some wonderful, like minded people in Texas. Over the years, we have had the opportunity to work with them as a rescue too. It's fun to visit with them and remember the day we met Meg and asked LOTS of questions about how to make a sucessful rescue in Oklahoma.
Megera has been a blessing in so many ways we can't even begin to tell you all of them. She has given us nothing but unconditional love. She is also the only Dane we own that has ever bitten one of us (and I remember it well...if you're ever bitten by a Great Dane, it isn't something you'll soon forget)...remember, I told you she has a protective streak and that is exactly what she was doing. She wanted to protect her baby Dane brother and thought I was getting onto him a little too much! :-)
Our Meggie baby has been the healthiest of all our Danes and we love her all the more for that. She is afraid of loud noises and strangers and she licks herself to the point of granulomas when she's stressed out, but that's just an extra excuse to snuggle in our opinion. We see the grey in her coat starting to show everywhere and it makes us cherish every second we have with this girl. There is absolutely no way to tell you all what a Great Girl our Megera is...we only hope that when you find your forever friend you will have the kind of love we can't explain here.
